Since before the first world war there has been a military presence, and secret testing facilities have been present for most of this time. Due to the usual British love of secrecy and the remote location along with the strange nature of some of the experimental procedures undertaken here, many legends have grown up about this place. To the casual observer, Orford Ness may appear to be just a vast, desolate landscape. A stark reminder of the Cold War era and the struggle for nuclear supremacy. Upon closer inspection, you will find a habitat that is abundant with wildlife, and that contains a rich history dating back to the 17th century. It is a National Trust site and they charge for ferry access, around the site is on foot only, but tractor-drawn trailer tours operate first Sat of the month, July – Sept, Booking is essential.
