Aldeburgh sea side town

Aldeburgh is a quaint Victorian seaside resort with a eclectic mix of old Victorian and Edwardian buildings many brightly painted in seaside colours. The town is located in a delightful position on East Suffolk’s Heritage Coastline.

Aldeburgh High Street has many first class restaurants, cafes, bars and famous fish and chip shops . It is renowned for its boutiques, delicatessens and art galleries as well as antiques and gifts, clothes, wines and book shops, all within a few minutes walk.

It was recently voted no. 5 as UK's best seaside town by the BBC. It has many pleasant old streets with unique features, like the two lookout towers and windmill on the beach. The towns meeting house "Moot Hall" is a grade I listed building dating back to 1540 which is now the local museum.

Moot Hall

The towns character is ideal for a family holiday or a weekend break. It safe and vibrant, bustling with activity in the summer and kicks back and relaxes in the winter letting time and tide cleanse the soul.

The High Street

The high street is located less than a minutes walk from the beach and acts as the main centre for a seaside holiday. Luckily Pelican cottage is situated right in the middle of the high street and has all the amenities you will need just outside the front door.

Town steps

There are two galleries nearby with the Aldeburgh Gallery right next door and the Peter pears gallery opposite.

The Market shop with green grocer, delicatessen (sells great "soup a la poisson"), fish stall and coffee shop is nearly opposite

The Beach

Aldeburgh beach

There is a mile long shingle (and some sand) beach that starts where the old shipping port of Slaughten used to be by the yacht club and Martello tower stretching up to the bird reserve and marshes where Maggie Hambling metal sculpture of "The Scallop" lives.

The south beach is very close to a big car park just by the windmill and yacht club, ideal to park up.

Lookout tower

The middle part of the beach is between the two lookout towers that were build by two rival fishing and pilotage groups. They wanted to be the first to see the big ships and send out pilots to see them safely up the river Alde towards Snape. This part of the beach is nearest to Pelican cottage were the best access is under the arch of the "Peter Pears Gallery" ( the one you can see the sea through from the front lounge).

Beach fish shop

Just up from the tower are more fisherman's hut that sells their catch mainly by the beach opposite Market cross place where you find the Moot Hall and for children the model boating lake.

Higher up the beach gets more of a nature reserve with wide sweeping views of the surrounding countryside and a long open beach leading to Thorpness. Great for exercising the dog and abandoning oneself in nature and open space.

The surrounding area

The town is surrounded by estuaries, marsh and heath land which are a mecca for walking, bird watching, golfing and sailing.

Inland there are many nature trails that lead you through reed beds and woodlands where you catch sight of the rare Avocets or roaming deer.

The walks are wonderful both inland into the open marshes that surround the town and along the beach with a visit to the sculpture on the beach. Cycling is easy area is this very flat area and bikes can be hired in the town.

Other local towns of note;

Snape

Aldeburgh enjoys an international reputation for its Annual Festival of Music & Arts held in June and also for concerts performed everyday during August. This is the centrepiece for a year round programme of events both in the town and at the nearby Maltings in Snape.

Lavenham

The most perfect medieval town in England and spectacular of the wool towns, this wonderfully atmospheric town has a unique collection of medieval buildings.

Southwold

One of the most picturesque seaside towns in England with fishermen’s cottages, green open spaces and pleasant old streets. The church and lighthouse are important landmarks. So too is the local brewery Adnam

Felixstowe

Really pretty seafront with well-kept gardens, multi coloured beach huts and bars and cafes.  Also leisure pool and some amusements so good for young children

Constable country - Flatford and Dedham

Both Gainsborough and Constable were born in the valley of the river stour, just a few miles from Ipswich.  The surrounding countryside provided the inspiration for their paintings.
